Sbor a Orchestr Univerzity Karlovy

Máte-li chuť se k nám přidat, čtěte, prosím, níže!

The Chorus and Orchestra of Charles University in Prague welcome new members!

The Orchestra welcomes new members to its string section, and will also gladly hear from advanced oboe, bassoon, horn, trumpet and trombone players. Strings are not usually auditioned, but undergo an informal period of probation before membership is confirmed. Wind and brass players on particular instruments are auditioned. All instrumental players should please email us as soon as possible on info@sboraorchestruk.cz for more information, letting us know of their orchestral experience. It is necessary to let us know before attending the first rehearsal, so that we can email you music in advance and advise you of the places where particular rehearsals will be held.

Our first rehearsal with new players will be on 21 February 2024 at 7.30 p.m. Rehearsals are normally held weekly on Wednesdays. Further, two weekend workshops will be held this semester (13-14 April and 4-5 May); attendance at both of these is essential. There will also be two additional rehearsals outside the Wednesday schedule: Tuesday, 7 May, 17:30-21:30 (attended also by external players, and in lieu of the rehearsal on Wednesday 8 May, which is a national holiday), and on Monday, 13 May.

Major concerts will be held in May, and the main work is Bruckner’s Symphony No. 4 (1878/1880 version). The dates are: Aula VŠE, Thursday, 9 May (with the kind collaboration of musicians from the University of Economics); and, most importantly, Czech Museum of Music, Tuesday, 14 May. In both cases rehearsals start at 5 p.m., concert dress is formal, and friends may be invited to attend free-of-charge.

We regret that we are unable to provide instruments or advise on their hire. We would ask you please to bring your own music stand, and to print out the music that will be sent to you electronically.

Our Chorus warmly welcomes new singers in all voices. A quick and informal voice trial for potential new members will be held in the course of the first two rehearsals, on 21 and 28 February 2024 at the Charvátův Sál, on the first floor of the hospital building at U Nemocnice, 1 (the closest tram stop being Moráň), 5-7 p.m. It is not necessary to write to us in advance – just feel free to come along to one of the above two Wednesday sessions and introduce yourself to us. No preparation is required! Rehearsals are held weekly on Wednesdays, in English as well as in Czech, so the language barrier need not be a problem!

There will also be two full weekend choral workshops (6-7 April and 20-21 April), attendance at which is essential. This semester we plan to perform, amongst other things, the Duruflé Requiem at the Aula of the Karolinum, on Tuesday, 23 April (preceded by a special afternoon and evening rehearsal at the Aula on Monday, 22 April); and a selection of beautiful motets by Anton Bruckner, in a major concert dedicated to the works of Bruckner, marking the two hundredth anniversary of Bruckner’s birth this year), held at the Czech Museum of Music on 14 May. Dress for both concerts is formal, and friends may be invited to attend free-of-charge.
