A warm welcome to new and returning members of the Chorus and Orchestra of Charles University in Prague!

CHORUS

The Chorus of Charles University in Prague continues to welcome new singers over the next few days. Do please come to one of our rehearsals, either this coming Wednesday (19 October) or, at the latest, next week (26 October) and introduce yourselves to us. We shall be pleased to hear you during the rehearsal break (we hold a brief voice trial and quite painless aural test, neither of which require any preparation!).

How to join the Chorus

  • Short auditions will be held at Charvátův Sál on Saturday 15 October, 9.30 a.m. – 12.30 noon , for which no preparation is needed; audition consists of a voice trial and aural test, and in practice the great majority of applicants are accepted each year
  • Induction and first rehearsal for new members continues on Saturday 15 October, 1.30-4.30 p.m. – so do please have the downloaded music with you!
  • First rehearsal for all members, Sunday, 16 October, 10 a.m. – 4.30 p.m.; at 5 p.m. members proceed to a nearby restaurant, to allow old and new members to meet
  • Subsequent rehearsals are weekly, on Wednesdays, 5-7 p.m., at Charvátův Sál
  • There is a weekend workshop 5-6 November, attendance at which is mandatory
  • If you have any symptoms of flu or Covid, please do not attend, but write to us, and we shall make alternative arrangements for you
  • Rehearsals are held in English, and our membership is international
  • Address of Charvátův Sál: III. interní klinika 1. lékařské fakulty UK, U Nemocnice 1, Praha 2 (the nearest tram stop being Moráň)

Plan for the semester

  • Sunday, 16 October: first rehearsal for all members 10 a.m. – 4.30 p.m.; at 5 p.m. members proceed to a nearby restaurant, to allow members to get to know each other
  • Subsequent rehearsals are on Wednesdays 5-7 p.m. at Charvátův Sál
  • Weekend 5-6 November: a weekend workshop at Charvátův Sál, attendance at which is mandatory
  • Tuesday 15 November, 6-10 p.m: additional rehearsal at the Aula of the Karolinum with Orchestra and soloists
  • Thursday 17 November: morning performances (Czech choral music) in front of Hlávka Hall of Residence (televised), the Palach monument and Albertov; short rehearsal at the Aula of the Karolinum followed by concert at 7 p.m., Beethoven Mass in C
  • Saturday 10 December: Saint-Saëns Christmas Oratorio at the Church of SS Simon and Jude, in collaboration with Choir “Labyrint”
  • Sunday 11 December: Ryba Christmas Mass at the Knights’ Hall of Karlštejn Castle, in collaboration with Beroun Chorus; two successive afternoon performances (hall sold out!)
  • Wednesday 14 December: rehearsal with Orchestra at the Aula of the Karolinum
  • Thursday 15 December: short rehearsal at the Aula followed by University concert, Ryba Christmas Mass with Orchestra and soloists
  • Monday 19 December: charity concert for Academical Parish at Nejsvětější Salvátor, Křížovnické náměstí
  • Tuesday 20 or Wednesday 21 December (to be confirmed): informal Christmas concert at Charvátův Sál, Christmas Carols and Ryba Christmas Mass
  • Optional: 23 December, Ryba Christmas Mass with Beroun Chorus and Orchestra at Svatý Jan pod Skalou (transport provided)

ORCHESTRA

How to join the Orchestra

  • Please email us at info@sboraorchestruk.cz if you have not already done so, telling us your instrument, experiences incl. previous orchestras, etc.; we shall respond individually
  • String players are warmly welcome in all sections; they are not auditioned, but assessed over several weeks, and membership is confirmed by section principals, the concert mistress and the conductors
  • Wind players are welcome for particular instruments, esp. oboes, bassoons and horns; wind players are either auditioned individually or invited to come to particular rehearsals for assessment
  • We shall email information about the venue of the first rehearsal and scans of your music; please print out the music, and bring it along, together with a music stand
  • Rehearsals are held in English, and our membership is international

Plan for the semester

  • First rehearsal is 7.30 – 9.30 p.m. on Wednesday, 12 October (address, scanned parts and further info will be in the email we send you); most rehearsals will be held weekly at the same time and venue, except for 9 November, for which the venue will be announced
  • Repertoire for this semester: Beethoven Mass in C, Bach Suite No. 2 in B minor, Bach Keyboard concerto in D minor, Dvořák Waltzes, Ryba Christmas Mass
  • If you display symptoms of ’flu or Covid please do not attend, but write to us to let us know; we shall do our very best to accommodate you
  • There are two weekend workshops, to be held in central Prague, on 22-23 October and 12-13 November
  • Tuesday 15 November: additional rehearsal, Aula of the Karolinum, 7-10 p.m.
  • Thursday 17 November: Concert for the Hlávka Foundation, Beethoven Mass in C, Aula of the Karolinum, short rehearsal preceding concert at 7 p.m.
  • Monday 28 November: we perform at the Annual Ball at Lucerna in association with the Orchestra of the University of Economics; programme to be confirmed
  • Sunday 11 December: Knights’ Hall at Karlštejn Castle – two successive performances (afternoon and late afternoon) of the Ryba Christmas Mass with Chorus and soloists
  • Wednesday 14 December: rehearsal at the Aula of the Karolinum
  • Thursday 15 December: University Christmas concert, Bach and Ryba Christmas Mass
  • Monday 19 December: Bach and Ryba at the Academical Parish Church of Nejsvětější Salvátor, Křížovnické náměstí, preceded by rehearsal
  • Tuesday 20 or Wednesday 21 December (to be confirmed): informal Christmas concert at Charvatův Sál at 6 p.m., preceded by brief rehearsal
  • For those who are still in Prague (optional), 23 December, Christmas Concert (Ryba Christmas Mass) at Svatý Jan pod Skalou (transport provided), in association with Orchestra of the University of Economics
